The lead actor gives a highly nuanced performance that can’t be fully talked about here so as to not give away anything about the story. Suffice to say, he carries the whole piece along even when the story itself has a few moments that dragged a bit. Ultimately, though, the build-up to the story’s big moment pays off; it just could’ve paid off just as well with a few minutes shaved off in the middle.
What I didn't like
It could have been tightened up a bit. While there was a line or two that addressed why it dwelt on it, the play does spend a bit too long on American boxing.
My overall impression
While the love of boxing and the history of boxing is definitely a big part of this play, it’s ultimately about something far more personal and emotional. No spoilers here! A bravura central performance anchors this compelling tale.
