What I liked

The piece was perfect for the intimate space of the Complex’s Dorrie Theatre. Audience members were invited to jot down their own insights about life obstacles on index cards at the beginning of the show as a prelude to the piece’s affirmation of self-care and self-identity. Shaunelle and Kelley did a great job navigating the space with tightly choreographed musical and dance interludes which provided a backdrop for protagonist Shairi’s journey to self-love, acceptance and strength.

What I didn't like

No improvements — the show also spotlighted community based organizations who are doing lifesaving work on intimate partner violence and sexual violence for Black women and women of color

My overall impression

A poignant, thoughtful and well-acted show by talented performers Shaunelle Curry and Kelley Nicole. This vivid mix of poetry, reflection, music and deft staging (featuring an array of props representing life’s milestones, personal possessions and emotional and social baggage) is not to be missed! The performers evocatively capture the inner struggles/triumphs of being a survivor through song, dance and playful dialogue.
