It was a great story with these two women, one set in present day the other 175 years ago. The actresses were very expressive and through their words and actions pulled me into it. I could see what they were describing. Great direction with a minimal amount of set pieces on stage. I think anymore it would have taken away from the message. Artfully directed and lit. Bravely acted - particularly by bree fernicke, whose accent was impeccable. Laila Abdo had issues with the Ipswich accent, frequently pronouncing muslim as mooslim which was distracting. However, my main issue with this play was simply that it came across as a very superficial rendering of what a middle aged man imagines about the female experience - made even worse by the too-daring choice to take on the experience of a female jihadi. It came across as clumsy, surface level and often cartoonish. Real psychological insight or research was lacking. I was very confused by this play and its acclaim. It seemed like a white liberal 101 guide to brown people, and frequently strayed into racist stereotypes. It's always so... full review

No wonder this triumphed in Great Britain! Solo shows are common, but telling in tandem the stories of two women living almost two centuries apart isn't. ECHOES is too tepid a title to sell this perfect Fringe vehicle: two actresses who spend 50 minutes telling analagous stories of abuse at the hands of husbands corrupted by their cultures, building compellingly to riveting, violent climaxes! Not the original Edinburgh cast, but two talented LA locals, well-directed, who command the stage---and our attention. If you're not afraid to learn some pieces of unjustly buried history, solidly crafted to this theatrical template, I think you'll be as captured as I was! ... full review
