The subject matter resonated deeply in our world where women are so problematically often trapped by patriarchal ideologies. The psychology of both characters was complex and utterly understandable, which made their struggles and tragedies hit home and feel profoundly relatable – despite the extreme the situations were that the characters both found themselves in.
What I didn't like
The physicality was occasionally possibly overly complex for the restraints of the space – but the actors handled it beautifully and made sense of translating the act of navigating cities and alleys into a black box with just a few rehearsal blocks.
My overall impression
This was a deeply powerful story about the dangers of religious extremism and opportunistic patriarchal interpretations of religion. The parallels between the two women’s lives, nearly 200 years apart, was a succinct exploration of how the more things change the more they stay the same. Brilliant performances by both actresses, exploring the ranges of their experiences from passionate idealism to desperation for justice.
