If you’re ever lucky enough to be the first to rediscover a lost piece of art that stirs you to your core, you’d probably want to share that piece of art with the world, too. That’s the basic premise behind “Resa Fantastiskt Mystisk,” the highly original and hilarious show from local comedy supergroup The Burglars of Hamm, playing now at The Broadwater Main Stage.

The lost piece of art in question is the title play by the almost-forgotten Swedish playwright Lars Mattsun, a contemporary of August Strindberg and Henrik Ibsen who somehow managed to fade into obscurity. It’s June – which for Los Angeles intimate theater means it’s time for the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Now, if you’ve never done the fringe, it’s a bit like doing a tasting menu with a drunk chef. Everything happens quickly, some things are brilliant, some experiments are catastrophes, and almost everything goes better with a wine pairing.

The idea behind the Hollywood Fringe, like most Fringe festivals, is quantity and compression. It’s a lot of small shows (many less than an hour), playing out over a couple of miles of Hollywood, and scheduled so you can see 2 or 3 shows in the same day. The fun of the fringe is, like that tasting menu, not the single remarkable thing but the variety of things one after another. To really get that experience, you need to make a day of it – or at least a full evening – and see at least 3 shows.

One of the pleasures of the Hollywood Fringe Festival is discovering something genuinely original amid the minefield of one-person shows. The Burglars of Hamm’s revival of its 1999 production of Resa Fantastiskt Mystisk, written by obscure Swedish playwright Lars Mattsun, is one of these finds. It is a clever skewering of pretension that’s laugh out loud funny.

The show begins with director Todd Merrill explaining who Mattsun was (a 19th-century writer convinced that August Strindberg, “the Great Corruptor,” had stolen his limelight) and why Merrill has chosen to adapt, direct, and choreograph this play. He’s given the audience headphones so he can comment throughout the show, to make sure we “get it.”

RESA FANTASTISKT MYSTISK To Return To Los Angeles After 15 YearsBurglars of Hamm, creators of the interactive sock-throwing parody of one-person shows, EASY TARGETS, named Best Comedy at the 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival, are returning for the 2018 Fringe. The Burglars will be re-staging their cult-hit, RESA FANTASTISKT MYSTISK. RESA, which premiered to great acclaim in 1999 at the Edge of the World Fest. In the years since, RESA has traveled to the Seattle Fringe, The New York Fringe, and the Edinburgh Fringe, and garnered almost universal critical acclaim, including raves in The New York Times and The Scotsman.
