What I liked

Loved the 50s style costumes!

What I didn't like

The band, while all great musicians, played much too loudly. In fact, it was difficult to understand most of the lyrics being sung throughout the performance. And a pet peeve of mine is when props are dropped on stage and left there, pulling the audience’s focus into wondering who will step on or kick it next. This was definitely the case with two pieces of paper dropped and left there for most of the performance, even though most of the actors at one point either stepped, jumped over, or kicked the crumbled up paper left center stage. Any actor worth their while should know to pick up anything out of place on stage, no matter how it got there.

My overall impression

This ambitious musical salute to the creative “beat” generation born in the NYC Village during the 1950s centers on showcasing the women whose poetry and books played an important role in the movement towards self-expression. With none of the performers even alive in the 50s, somehow each manager to bring the spirit of the Beat poets to life, most recognizable being Allen Ginsburg and Jack Kerouac. In fact, this was the first time I ever heard about the contributions of the most important women in the movement.
