What I liked

The show was honest about some painful truths while remaining optimistic.

What I didn't like

I wonder about the real anger that might remain. The author is very gentle with his audience and doesn’t allude to any long-term scars. Maybe the sequel will tell us more about how he got from there to his seemingly generous, grateful happy self of today.

My overall impression

Black When I Was A Boy was so entertaining from start to finish. It was a funny and poignant telling of the key moments that defined Cooper Bates’s self perception. It is a telling of modern American history that powerfully conveys the impact of a racist community whose impact was felt both quietly and violently.
