I loved the premise of using “The Stages of Nigrescence” as the backdrop to tell her story. It flowed really well and kept me engaged. I really saw & heard all of her characters. I loved the use of her dad’s voice mail message. So courageous, I don’t know how she doesn’t fall to pieces every time she hears it.
What I didn't like
I’d like to know a little more about her Mom’s drug abuse. Spoiler alert** Her mom’s death was very sudden but maybe that was meant to be a plot twist. If so, it worked because it definitely shocked me, super sad.
My overall impression
This piece has all the makings of a great solo show: Great structure, Honest, Funny & Heart warming. Taught me a little about my own blackness. Misty is true storyteller. She is SO FUNNY. She could make me laugh reading the phone book.
