The Heartbreak Club is a pop musical that incorporates limited set pieces and projection elements to build an imagined retelling of a real life story of friendship-turned-romance-turned-loss, focused on two main characters with the assistance of an ensemble cast—the eponymous “Heartbreak Club”.
As the title suggests, the story revolves around our protagonist’s heartbreak, and the coping mechanisms she turns to before, during, and after the events that lead to said heartbreak. This show is an opportunity for these characters, and by extension the audience, to engage in catharsis through a staged version of a familiar exercise that happens in the minds of anyone who has ever been heartbroken: “What if I had said this instead? What if I had done that? What if I’d made a different choice? What if I hadn’t been afraid to say what I felt out loud? What if things had turned out differently?”
The show is a meditation on how the intersection of social media, technology, the internet, and the increasing interconnectivity of the world affects all of our relationships, with a focus especially on friendships and romantic relationships. Our generation experiences heartbreak in different ways than previous generations did, precisely thanks to the development of the aforementioned technological advances. So even though heartbreak continues to be universal, these recent developments create a generational and societal disconnect surrounding questions of love and heartbreak (and the way we deal with and talk about it) that we are still learning to reconcile and understand collectively. The musical aims to examine the ways in which all these factors contribute to and affect the dynamics and the universality of heartbreak.
