Veteran actress and comedienne Karen Bankhead presents two hilarious and thought provoking pieces based on her experiences as a black woman in America. The first, The ABW Complex, is a sci-fi spoof of the confusing, confounding concept of the "Angry Black Woman. When the lovely, intelligent and unsuspecting Judith Brownlee is abducted by aliens while waiting in line at Panda Express in Inglewood, she experiences an interrogation by beings from a galaxy far, far away who can’t get enough of her ABW trait. Judith ends up showing them a thing, or two.
In the V05 Experience: “This young woman of color girl used to want to be Marcia Brady. Now all she wants is for somebody to write her a prescription for Prozac and not ask a lot of questions…”
This segment chronicles the trials, tribulations and uplifting hope of an actress of color, who doesn’t know if she’s hip enough and is waylaid by crippling depression, ultimately triumphing and restoring her faith. Karen remarkably portrays a rapid fire succession of several lovable and hilarious characters with a major dose of inspiration from the “living legend” Etta Mae Mumphries, sometimes known as “the Black Forrest Gump.”
