Loves Adventures

comedy · broads' word ensemble · United States of America

Love is a battlefield, and Margaret Cavendish was one to take this literally in her 1600s classic, Loves Adventures. The epic follows Lady Orphant, who joins the army to pursue the man she loves, while Lady Bashful fights at home against suitors she has no desire to marry. Known for being a feminist of her time, Cavendish used humor to challenge gender norms in a war many women are still waging.

Broads’ Word Ensemble and director Elissa Anne Polansky have infused Loves Adventures with 1980s overtones – not only the fun of Rubik’s Cubes, cootie catcher fortunes, and crimped hair – but also with a nod to this period’s evolution of social attitudes regarding gender, class, and race.
