What I liked

Joel Sutton (as Clyde Barrow) completely brought Andrew Peck’s play – which is a good one – to life. Funny, tragic, sassy, beaten down, dangerous and impossible to take your eyes off of. The costumes, sets, and overall look elegantly combined the 1930s historical figures, the classic 1960s film, and even the 2013 miniseries while subtly offering its own interpretation. Physically, it built a convincing, cohesive whole.

What I didn't like

The play features the “reality” of the show contrasted with characters delivering flash-back / flash-forward monologs directly to the audience. These changes were communicated inconsistently, mostly with jarring and uninspired changes in lighting. This is such a massive part of the original text, and has been dealt with before in a variety of interesting ways, and it is an oversight in the direction that this aspect of the play doesn’t even really seem to have been considered.

My overall impression

A stylish reimagining of some very established source material.
