“I’m Too Fat for This Show” was an energetic, intelligent, at times spastic, humorous, and touching play. It was the combination of humor and pathos, which, in less adept hands would have seemed cloying, but which here struck a chord with me—allowing me to laugh at, and also to sympathize with, the absurdity and struggle of eating disorders and OCD. And yet, perhaps the most impressive feat of the play was that it’s not simply an “issue play,” taking on a social ill of society and demonstrating its construction and perniciousness. We are all aware of the impossible standard that our culture places on a narrow definition of beauty, but what “I’m Too Fat For This Show” demonstrates is a deeply humane and human portrait of struggle, suffering, and perseverance that is both sad and humorous, that is both demoralizing and hopeful, and that is, in the end, a deep portrait of vulnerability and talent.

My overall impression
This play was a treat to see, and I cannot recommend it highly enough! Ms. Huffman’s performance was nothing short of brilliant.
