As a frequent theater-goer, I found Paul Yen's one-man show, "Secret Identity Crisis," to be an extraordinary accomplishment. It is poignant, compelling, humorous, and challenging. But, most of all, it is truthful. By using the most iconic superheroes to explore questions of self, identity, and the experience of being a member of a visible minority in Hollywood, Yen, has created a highly accessible means for audience members to grasp unto and understand the travails he and every actor of color have endured in their efforts to flourish in an environment that is still riven by stereotypes and prejudice. Yen's writing is articulate and powerful, and his acting demonstrates what it means to "lose oneself in character" and "to experie... full review

With the onslaught of insensitive whitewashing and erasure of Asian American history by the mainstream media, Paul Yen’s "Secret Identity Crisis" is a breath of fresh air that seeks to critique and challenge this disturbing status quo. However, while the show’s exploration of 3 different superheroes’ re-imagined backstories from a minority’s POV is a clever concept, its execution feels a bit repetitive since all three stories hit the same beats. Because of the short 1 hour run time, it can be difficult for the audience to fully delve into the stories before Yen moves on to his next character. This was something I personally needed to see in my life. I feel this play was a perfect way of raising awareness on social issues without complaining or preaching. It's amazing to me that one man, a small stage, and the Hollywood fringe, taught me so much about my own community and self identity.... full review

Before the show I knew whitewashing existed in the film industry but did not know much about it. Mainly because I didn't think it affected to me but I learned that if anyone will make a dent in issue, the audience would have the biggest impact. I too grew up as an Asian American living a whitewashed life, so this was a very relatable experience. Hilarious, creative, and eye-opening. It was impressive to watch Yen integrate his message with the iconic stories of the most well known superheroes. ... full review

This show touched on real issues of inequality in hollywood and the media in an authentic way. Paul shared his personal experience being raised by immigrant parents, searching for positive role models throughout with childhood, and trying to make it in hollywood as an adult. Overall, Paul's adaptation of his dealings with these experiences into common super heroes is creative, honest, and leaves you with a feeling of hope for the future. ... full review
