What I liked

The show addressed bias in casting in a new way and I appreciated how this story engaged the larger social and historical impacts of this issue with very specific characters and an understanding of the power and influence of these “ground-breaking” personalities and how stark the need to allow black women to play people on stage and in film instead of characters.

I especially liked when the “actor” character was speaking at the end, because that was the most authentic.

What I didn't like

I thought the pacing was a little uneven and we spent a little too much time with the inner lives of individual characters instead of watching them address or be confronted by their conflicts. For instance, toward the end, it would have been nice to see the actor communicate with the tropes or communicate her epiphanies instead of implying those important moments.

My overall impression

I loved how this show tapped into a cultural relationship between stereotypical black female characters and the psychological and physical impact they have on African American women today. I walked away feeling like I had gained a new perspective, which is my favorite part of seeing theater.
