What I liked
The acting was incredible— clearly this cast could handle “serious” theater with equal facility as this absurd comedy. Absolutely loved the co-opting of U2 lyrics to stand in for Lucky’s nonsensical rant. The writing was excellent, smart, and hilarious— nailed the tone of Godot but also captured the silliness of the whole situation. Bono continually calling “The Edge” by his full name— The Edge— made me laugh every time. I was enormously entertained.
What I didn't like
It’s a very clean, well-rehearsed, and beautifully staged production— wouldn’t even know it’s Fringe! Nothing to improve!
My overall impression
A perfect parody with just the right dose of hilarity and heart. World-class acting with total commitment makes the comedy all the more heightened, and the piece generally delightful. Even if you haven’t brushed up on your Beckett, you’ll be totally transfixed by this immensely talented cast. As for those who do know Godot, the writing is spot on, and it’s bizarre how well-suited the play adapts to being about U2 and pizza— it takes a special kind of vision to see that connection, and Richard totally nails it. While the play’s a total joy for theater nerds, it also lampoons celebrity culture and eco-commerce enough to make it accessible to all of us.
