This is a solid #SeeItLA as it is a highly accessible take on one of the favorites from Shakespeare’s canon.
What I didn't like
There are a couple of places where mispronunciations mangle the poetry a bit, and due to the cutting there are things brought up in the beginning that are never resolved in the end.
My overall impression
Merely Players Shakespeare Co. delivers A Midsummer Night’s Dream with all of the prerequisites – ridiculous Mechanicals, warring Theseus and Hippolyta, rash lovers and a mischievous Puck – all in a quick 90 minutes. Even better, they throw in their own personality by enhancing the magical aspects of Oberon and the fairies. It’s a fun addition and helps to explain how Oberon is ever able to get close enough to a sleeping Hippolyta to anoint her eyes.
