What I liked

A very well written, well directed and well played tribute to and parody of the “Noir” genre. This is the kind of creative and thoughtful mixing of media (and performers with incredibly diverse talents) that makes these talents and the Fringe generally such a gift to Los Angeles. Lauren Byrd as Lucy Shapiro is simply spectacular. What a voice and a presence – I had no idea how fantastic her voice is! Nathan Ondracek and Max Lichtig have great chemistry as the detectives and each has his own unique gift for classic patter… Nathan is especially noteworthy for his timing and Max for his quick wit. Emily Decker, whose talent is always a joy, gave, for me, an eye opening and stellar performance as Zelda! And all of it was beautifully directed by Julia Lisa. Kudos truly to the entire cast and crew!

What I didn't like

The show and the dialogue were so quick witted at times that it was difficult (particularly from the back of the house) to catch all of the banter (which was extraordinarily clever).

My overall impression

I have seen most of these performers in many different roles and genres and I am consistently struck by the magnitude of their individual (and collective) talents and their creativity. I am of the opinion that theatre, especially in the incubator and showcase of the likes of the Hollywood Fringe, should innovate, challenge, take risks, set the bar high and then raise it. I think this offering from Sugi Productions hits that mark and it will continue to do so.
