Ernest Kearney’s “My Alamo War” is an unforgettable journey into the seedy heart of 1980s Hollywood, and a mission to bring to justice the Alamo Christian Foundation, a Pentacostal group, posing as an extension of the Jesus Movement of the 60s and 70s. The Alamos and their followers scoured the streets of Hollywood for the lost, desperate and destitute, shuttling them off to evening services an hour away in Saugus, CA. In this performance, I couldn’t help but imagine Kearney as Captain Ahab aboard his Pequod (a Dodge Dart) in search of his White Whale: cult leader, Tony Alamo. Ernest Kearney is an exceptional storyteller---his description of his war with the despicable human being that is Tony Alamo was amusing, engrossing, and at times,poetic. Was he tilting at windmills? Yes. Was it worth it? Absolutely.... full review

It's always the SOLO shows which make or break the Fringe experience, isn't it? I was curious to know more about the genesis of the Alamo Foundation (pronounced "al-AM-o", not "AL-a-mo") and learned a lot of cogent history from this guy, who maniacally devoted two years of his life (1981 and 1982) to tormenting Alamo's followers, and even the Great (in his own eyes) Man himself! An entertaining performance from a surprisingly literate and witty script---written to be published, I'd guess, more than performed. This guy is an awesome, beautiful man/storyteller/person... and any time I sit in an Ernest Kearney audience, I always feel comfortable, totally endeared, and I learn a little something about what it's like to commit fully to life and your beliefs. Ernest is a gem, and those who experience his shows know how lucky they are to have found him. A definite must! A master storyteller/human/and cult crusader!!! Ooof! ... full review

Ernest Kearney is a force of nature. His command of the stage is powerful and funny at the same time. His monologue is built on brilliant images. As with his show last year, "Out My Window," Ernest shows that the greatest creativity springs from the complexities of real life.... full review

As the show progresses, we see Kearney gradually realize he can't keep fighting this war and have a normal life, and the process of his realizing this is the turning point in the play. I found his performance convincing and passionate, and the whole piece was witty and well-written. It should re-emerge in an evening of plays about peoples' experiences with cults and scam artists.... full review
