As a long time fan of Ms. Chaffee's work, I was delighted yet again by her most recent play "Your Mother's Vagina". It is as funny as it is poignant. Her dialogue is unflinching it it's honesty and her wit strikes with lightning speed and accuracy. Ms. Chaffee and her cast (Ms. Hirshorn and Ms. Gudenrath), have created characters who are deeply human and relatable. They have genuine chemistry which only further enhances the humor and intimacy of the play. Under Ms. Chaffee's skilled direction, the pacing of "Your Mother's Vagina" compliments the circumstances and emotional journeys of the characters on stage. Your Mother's Vagina is a hilarious and completely unsentimental examination of the overwhelming challenges many women face as they navigate the murky territory of sexuality and reproduction. The fast paced and razor sharp dialogue between the two female characters, played with exquisite eccentricity by Beth Gudenrath and Rachel Hirshorn, kept me laughing as the disintegrating fabric of the characters' lives revealed profound states of desperation. I was gonna write a cutesy punny little review, y'know "when I entered Your Mother's Vagina, I knew I'd be totally satisfied," blah blah. But the truth is, I don't want to be cutesy or punny. Because it deserves far more than that. I was expecting laughs, because Amy Chaffee makes me laugh. I wasn't expecting tears. Amy's characters are so well-drawn that you know who they are right away without the need for the clumsy exposition so many writers fall back on. Beth Gudenrath and Rachel Hirshorn approach each sentence with relish, as though they're relieved to have words that women actually SAY falling out of their mouths.
