What I liked
Really fun, funny, and well-executed overall. Loved all of the self-aware gags that highlighted the small cast (and those playing multiple roles seemed to have the most fun!). Performances were excellent.
What I didn't like
Not much to dislike. It delivers the campy fun it promises.
My overall impression
A fun production with a stellar cast. This musical adaptation doesn’t stick play-by-play to the original film’s story line (as thin as that story line was) but the real essence of The Toxic Avenger is the comical and over-the-top tone of the film, which is definitely here. The musical has playfully added in elements of modern day anxiety about pollution and global warming, which fits this retelling of the story. Of course, at the end of the day the show is just a fun, campy, comic book-style romp—as it should be. It works.
