Emotionally transparent, Vanessa tackled a delicate subject with grit and charm. Kudus to her for bringing both comedy and honesty to a topic usually kept sealed in the confessional booths of women’s hearts.
The use of the teddy bear was a genius move of simple, effective staging.
What I didn't like
Vanessa had a surplus of material that would make a sharper, wittier, sexier show if shaped and trimmed into essentially a one-hour stand-up act. All the makings of a great comedian are plain to see; the writing and directing just needs to take on the purposeful rhythms of stand-up. Then the jokes will land with a real punch and the painful moments will hit even harder.
My overall impression
A brave and funny share of a sexual journey that was distinctly Catholic, Mexican, and at the same time universal. A great add to the growing lexicon of women’s voices in writing, performance and culture!
