What I liked
Dealing with, oddly, a truly unspoken of and stigmatized subject matter.
Performances were great.
Minimal props and wardrobe were used creatively and kept the attention on what was important.
What I didn't like
I thought the Spanish guy was supposed to be a French guy. haha!
My overall impression
So much of art, especially within the art community (because, let’s face it, we care most about what our peers think, no?), has a great deal to do with speaking the unsaid and showing the unseen. The more an artist dares to do this, it seems the more praise he/she receives. Unless it is about an unpopular subject matter. Surely a better illustration of irony there cannot exist.
This is why I enjoyed this show. Carla hid little in this exploration of oneself within a culture and world completely contrary to the self. Whether about sexuality or not, the base level human desire for the freedom to be one’s true self cannot be denied, and it is my thought that those who have felt the clash of that need against the currents of this planet will appreciate how this particular character journeys and explores them for herself.
Surely its humor and creative use of space and environment aided in this exploration. And the performances invited me warmly and curiously into a world that seemed, though possibly uncomfortable at times, very much like home.
I think this work is a courageous export and that Carla is powerful in her vulnerability.
