My overall impression

It had been too long since I’d seen a laugh out loud funny play like Babygirl. The humor and pathos I discovered in this one woman play written and performed by Kaypri, directed by Ayana Cahrr, and performed at the Lounge Theatre was a super treat, The coming of age story of a multi-racial girl growing into womanhood framed by the television shows I grew up watching hit home with me. The bip, bop and pow of Batman fighting evil villains, Arnold saying to “whatcho talkin’ ’bout, WIllis,” and the many other catch phrases and moments took me back to my youth in a fun, previously unimagined way. Kaypri’s acting chops never let me off the hook; my mouth was stuck in a frozen smile almost the entire period of her performance. I look forward to seeing the second half of the play and was not turned off by the cliffhanger of today’s performance. My favorite scene has to be when the young Kaypri tries out a perm at the behest of her black female friends and learns the hard way that you can’t always listen to other people’s advice. The fifty minute production teemed with bits of wisdom and thought-provoking anecdotes. I loved it. Thumbs up all the way!
