I love women. I appreciate women. I have no idea what it's like to be a woman. Smile, Baby is probably as close as I will ever get. The women of this ensemble capture the essence of what it is to be a woman in today society with humor, gravitas and only the smallest bit of bitterness. This outstanding ensemble effortlessly flows from sketch to sketch. At no time does anything feel preachy or labored. The entire ensemble brings their A game, particularly Madison Shepard, whose characters are all crisp and purpose driven. A fantastic show with great writing and smart direction. Smile, Baby is an amazing comedy about street harassment written by Savannah Dooley and directed by Kate Motzenbacker. It boasts an all-woman cast, many of whom are people of color, which is in line with The Others' theater philosophy and mission statement. All that being said, don't be fooled. This isn't some didactic, preachy show about learning an important lesson by putting yourself in someone else's shoes, or realizing you've done bigoted things by having overly hokey examples of poor behavior thrown at you. I laughed so I wouldn't have to cry. Wickedly funny, and full of too many moments that are all too real for a woman growing up under the boot of the patriarchy. "Smile, Baby" takes the age old debates about women protecting themselves (should what you're wearing matter? does it matter anyway?) and turns them on their head, highlighting the most absurd aspects of "avoiding" harassment-- showing us that it isn't the answer to these questions we should care about, but the grotesque reality that forces us to have them. This is a must see show! Not just for women, but especially for men. It really captures the crap women have to put up with. But it's never preachy. It does it with a sense of humor, yes, maybe a little too raunchy and gross at time, but even the most offensive moments have impact. It will make you laugh, it will make you wince, it will make you angry, but most importantly, it will make you think. The script is solid and brought to life by a group of amazing actors who transform into new characters with each "sketch" that it would be easy to believe this were a cast of hundreds. As a woman I could relate to every word spoken and every emotion felt on that stage. And as I the show ended and I looked around the room, I was pleasantly surprised to see they weren't just preaching to the choir as the packed audience was nearly half men! In a hilarious and affecting 1 act, Savannah Dooley hits the nail on the head with 'Smile, Baby' that has up until now only been truly realized in the #YesAllWomen social media campaign. Like whoa. So glad this group of hilarious, talented women created an exceptionally entertaining show on this topic. I was nearly crying with laughter at some moments (probably because some of the sketches hit so close to home with issues women face in public pretty much daily) and cringing at others (because I was moved). Nice variety of sketches tacking different moments of discomfort in a woman's day to day life. It's clear that everyone in this show has put their hearts and soul into it and really believes in the message. I'm really glad this show premiered in LA. Although everyone needs to see this. If you're hitting up a bunch of shows at The Complex this season, you don't want to miss this one!... full review
