My overall impression

Smile, Baby is an amazing comedy about street harassment written by Savannah Dooley and directed by Kate Motzenbacker. It boasts an all-woman cast, many of whom are people of color, which is in line with The Others’ theater philosophy and mission statement.

All that being said, don’t be fooled. This isn’t some didactic, preachy show about learning an important lesson by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, or realizing you’ve done bigoted things by having overly hokey examples of poor behavior thrown at you. This is a comedy.

Granted, it’s a comedy with a message, but from beginning to end, this play entertains. From great gags to raunchy lines, and costumes that’ll make shock and amaze to the hilarious comedic delivery of all the cast members, this is truly a fantastic play worth taking the time to see.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a genuine laugh. I appreciate that it also has a social conscience, but whether or not that’s important to you, this play will have you laughing until you’re in tears (if you’re anything like me, anyway).
