Anouilh's Antigone (Barbara Bray)

Wow! So well done! I was very impressed with how creatively thy were able to use such a small space and simple props to create such a rich and elaborate performance. Amazing acting all around from Brittany McGregor's solid performance as Antigone, to Miguel Perez's booming presence as Creon in every scene he's in, to the haunting and surprisingly funny Tyler Peck's Prologue/Chorus, rounded out by Michael Vega's hilarious interpretation as Jonas. Antigone was too uneven a production for me to fully enjoy. Though Ms. McGregor has a compelling presence, things really came alive when Miguel Perez came onstage as Creon. Had the play consisted of only their relationship and struggle I would have been happier. Among the other players, only Michael Vega as Jonas did anything interesting. I was terrifically annoyed by Tyler Peck’s smug portrayal which he apparently doesn’t think we need to actually hear, either. Yes, we’re in a small house but most of what he and Katarina Rose Fabic say is either rushed and inarticulate or mostly just inaudible. Perez is the real deal here.... full review

It's very rare to watch a Greek tragedy that makes you laugh!! And that's what I loved about it. The acting was amazing!!!! The use of the minimal space and the way it was blocked was incredible!!! All the relationships between the characters were unique to each other which made the story so believable!!! Great directing, clearly the show had incredible work behind the scenes!!! Whoo boy! It's embarrassingly awful. Except for Miguel Perez as Creon, the actors just aren't up to Greek tragedy and the direction is practically non-existent. Rubber-faced mugging isn't acting and neither is shouting. The actors often don't seem to know what to do with their feet. Argh! Skip it.... full review

Heading in to see Anouilh's Antigone, I had a limited knowledge of the play and was excited to see a new interpretation of the morality story that I had read in high school. Even if some of the details of the story had faded, I was empowered coming in that I knew the play was not a horror story about a mysterious bug spray and it's effects sweeping across the kingdom (ANTI-GONE- say it a few times and you can imagine on the shelf next to the OFF and deet products.) I have been to many plays in my life- Broadway, off- Broadway, Community theater and small shows like this one, but I have never seen an opening like this that Joseph Matarrese (director) presented to the audience. This may not be your typical fringe festival show... but it is a must see! Joe Matarrese thrusts you into the world of Antigone and you almost forget you are watching a Greek Tragedy. Antigone herself, played by a young woman named Brittany, embodies this character so beautifully! She had teen angst and deep sorrow and eloquently spoke those words. As any actor would know... there is a trap that you can fall into with so much dialogue, but Brittany kept my full attention never getting lost in her words. Great job Joe, Amy, John!! The theater program would have you believe that Anti Gone was a punk adventure about counter culture what with the spray paint lettering design on the pamphlet when in fact “Antigone” is a Greek tragedy. I bit my lip for what was sure to be a slog through antiquity. I was pleasantly surprised. The story of heroine Antigone is bold and empowering and performed very well by Brittany McGregor. But it was Creon that I enjoyed the most. Played by Miguel Perez, Creon is a tragic villain whose conflicting morals make him very sympathetic. All actors carry their roles well and utilize the small theater space to their advantage. From the front row, I had rested my feet on the stage until Creon’s booming voice made me want to reconsider. Really young talent who, for the most part, are good. This was a master class due to the superb Miguel Perez who plays Creon…who largely dominates the play with a very good Antigone. "Amazing" because of Perez. Such a terrific riff on the story of Antigone…do not miss this!!!!... full review

To be fair, I didn't see the entire play. Partly because there were no seats and my date and I were sitting on the floor in the isle. But when people came rushing behind us in the dark clamoring for non-existent seats, it got uncomfortable very fast. So, it came down to watching the entire play while standing and peering over the tops of people's heads (I am short) or leaving. I would have stayed if the acting was amazing. But instead the lead delivered her lines without any depth. It was almost like she was trying to remember her lines- stuck on the words, not building a relationship. So again... it could have been the distraction from the audience that made this performance so lack luster. But what I experienced wasn't good at all.... full review

It is annoying to me that this review comes at the end Fringe and will do no good as far as raising awareness of this show to the festival goers. But with three hundred plus productions that’s going to happen. So all this review can do now is list the talented cast and credit the skilled director for staging a stripped down, bare staged Antigone that came as close to knocking my socks off as anything I’ve seen in years.
