If I were a mermaid, I would have swam to the very deepest depths of the Sea, found the most beautiful oyster, gently opened it up and found Kyla Garcia, the most beautiful pearl in the entire ocean! Kyla Garcia's beautiful and incredibly moving story "The Mermaid Who Learned How to Fly" is not only flawlessly written, but performed with such energy and passion that I felt that I had learned how to fly myself by the end of her miraculous show! Kyla is a gem! Keep your eyes and ears out for her now and in the future!! ... full review

Kyla is a MAGICAL performer so it's perfect that one of her central characters is a fairy. This captivating lady portrays several characters, transitioning flawlessly from one to the next, to the point that you'll forget you're only watching one person! The show is heartwarming and a breath a fresh air that will make you remember that we all have a right and a responsibility to learn how to fly. A fringe must-see!... full review

We go to the theatre to be told great stories, to be taken on a journey, and to see magic happen right before our eyes. Kyla Garcia blows the audience away with her ability to fulfill not only those desires, but takes you on a ride (or flight) you'll be thinking about for days. What good art should do. Her writing is truthful, from the heart, poetic, with the ability to make you feel like it was written just for you. And her performance of the material is even more awe-inspiring. Watching this show you deeply feel for the central character's conflict as well as celebrate her discoveries. But what I most took away from this show was gratitude, because once you witness this woman tackle the amazing feat of powerful writing, vibrant movement, d... full review

This show really stayed with me after i saw it! It was captivating and moving . Kyla shifts from one character to the next beautifully . Her fairy godmother character narrates the story in a fun , playful and moving way and the main character Victoria is one we can all relate to in one way or another, i mean who hasn't been heartbroken, lost and in search of an answer when it comes to love?… I highly recommend this show, it is wonderfully written and directed. Go see it! ... full review

A definite must-see of this year's Fringe festival. ... full review

To see this show is to fall in love with Kyla Garcia. She sparkles, she shines, she gives an explosion of emotional color and vocal music that weaves the air like magic and pulls people to their feet, professing their love and devotion. It's a show that makes the audience feel cared for, infatuated and even a little aroused. She plays dozens of roles, each better than the next. You are hard pressed to find a better solo performance at this years Hollywood Fringe. Kyla is real star, with a disco-ball heart. ("Did he just say "disco-ball heart?" Yes, he did. BOOOOOM!) ... full review

I'm going to be honest and say that one person shows are a tough sell for me - I am one of those people who almost always needs interplay in order to be really engaged. That being said, "The Mermaid Who Learned How to Fly" is EXCELLENT. I really, really enjoyed it. The characterizations are exceptional - I think part of the reason I enjoyed this show so much is that I honestly felt like I was watching a multi-person cast. Kyla Garcia is a truly talented actress. If you're already a fan of solo shows, seeing this one should be a no-brainer. If you're like me and you don't typically gravitate towards them, do yourself a favor and check this one out.... full review
