My overall impression

Can you categorize your heart? For those of us who aren’t fond of labels in any figurative shape or form, Keaton Talmadge’s solo show is a delightful, spot-on skewering of snap judgments and society’s expectations. Oh, and it’s also way sexy. Because here, Keaton’s personal “Whaaat?” discovery involves falling madly and passionately in love. After kissing another girl.

So what does gay look like? More to the point, how does gay feel? Or is it really gay? Does it really matter? Ms. Talmadge is a dynamic, physical performer and this engaging romp in and out of an unexpected bed is also smart and very funny. No, it’s not just about sex or sexuality, it’s about searching for and uncovering what’s beneath all of our preconceived notions about who we’re supposed to be – and what we’re supposed to do – particularly as women. Built around a framing device of dictionary definitions, the show moves beautifully under Kelleia Sheerin’s smooth direction. While musical interludes haven’t quite found their place yet, “Define: Different” is an appealing look at what it’s like to expand our horizons after our minds are blown open. It can happen.
