Cedar’s formidable characterization and storytelling are best served when freed from the restrictive prose of Orwell’s political satires. I would have been completely happy, and no less aware of the message on human dignity, to spend the entire hour – and quite possibly more – watching him perform from just Orwell’s more intimate and personal memoir. Here is a fantastic example of an actor on top of his game who has made brilliant choices to dramatize. There is not a single false note from the moment he enters the stage. The physical exhaustion and sly humor in the amusing opening sequence “Down & Out in Paris and London” was viscerally real; as was the rage and indignation in “Animal Farm,” and the blending of love with the passion for freedom in “1984” - all there and vibrant. Hey, Larry Cedar is a great actor (sorry I missed his recent “Lear”) and all he needs is larger parts and bigger theatres. Orwell is one of my favorite authors and Cedar does him proud and, with our recent Big Brother-type scandals, shows great prescience in his choices.
