Dick & Jayne Get A Life

Every actor/actress is on par. The integration within the intimate small theatre setting is unique and brilliant. Dialogue is critical in this production, and it is well done, so go, and be ready to listen and have a good time. Wonderful.... full review

I've always been a fan of Peppur and her writing. She writes for "real" people and what I mean by that is, as humans were all flawed in some way. She brings a humanity to her writing that is relatable. That being said, I loved the show. I thought it was innovative, funny, honest and smart. Great direction as well. My only note (if I can be brutally honest) is, to possibly recast the mom role. I thought all the actors did a great job but the woman who played the mother was overacting so much that it was almost distracting. I wasn't the only one who shared that sentiment as it was talked about after the show. I'm sure she's a wonderful actress but maybe this just wasn't the role for her. Just my two cents. "Not my thing" . . . having said that . . . No actor pleases me as much as NINA DONATO. If you stuck her in a dinghy, in the middle of the ocean, alone, and gave her no other direction but to row for forty minutes -- no dialog -- she would have you spellbound. NINA DONATO plays the part of MARY, and I found it excruciating waiting for her to make her entrance. (Pausing, for lengthy amounts of time, isn't healthy for this piece.) But enter she does and before they finish dressing the stage, you can feel you are in MARY'S home. Why? Because of Nina's body language, and, the futzing around she does with the flowers "MARY" just picked from her backyard garden. No dialog, and you are there. What follows is energy and realism. This show was great. Michael Hampton who plays Dick, took me on a journey and I would watch him in anything. I also thought the writing was brilliant and raw, with depth and feeling. A well-written "quirk" of a show! The acting was fair, some characters (the sheriff, the not-quite-character/set changer) were excellent in their minimal cameos. The play is written in a film/tv style with LOTS of set and scene changes...not my particular cup of tea for live stage as it stops the action and interrupts the flow of the show. Some scenes could have easily taken place without a set change using creative blocking or lighting, hence the 'C' I'll give to the director. Also a lot of misc props (three phones?). The writing was most definitely the highlight and a future run could benefit from more creative staging, specific lighting and better actors.... full review

Peppur's comedic writing has a rhythm to it, a quirky verbal version of ping pong. Unfortunately for me, the actor's delivery just didn't match the pacing on the opening night performance that I caught. Maybe, it was a director's choice. But overall, it came off as flat. I felt that what was on the page never translated to the stage. Based on the strength of the writing, it should have been much better.... full review
