Unfortunately- in the wake of films these days, the story arc here is not very original. The writer brings a good conflict to the stage- but has not really given the characters an arc that changes them through the course of the piece. I went in anticipating the end and not being surprised by the outcome. With that said, both actors were very committed to their roles and brought the audience the sense of urgency and despairs that they successfully maintain throughout the piece. Hats off to the cast for their unwavering commitment to these intense characters. The actors are the true highlight of this piece. Set in a nondescript room periodically surrounded by the alarming sound of high-voltage electricity, you soon deduct that these P.O.W.s are in for trouble. Unfortunately, the script did not have the substance to get me to care enough about either of them for the ending to prove effective. This was a fantastic play. I am a fellow Fringer who was just simply taking in the scene at Fringe Central and decided to drop in to see this show. The best decision I've made all Fringe. I saw this play last night and I am still blown away. I thought the actors were amazing!!! They immediately took us on the journey and didn't let go. We were in their world! The direction flawless in conveying this dystopian claustrophobic world and it's affects upon its characters and us the audience. Great theater! While the actors were talented and fully committed to their roles, the play itself seemed rather pointless. There was not enough exposition to care at all for the characters. You have no idea why they are in the situation you see the in. You have no idea of their relationship or background. I was not emotionally invested because I simply didn't have enough information to care about the characters. Also, there was no pay-off. No insights into humanity or underlying messages - just 20 minutes of two people being terrified and tortured. Mercifully it was short and free. ... full review

This short 20 minute play is definitely not for everyone. Actors, Alexa Giuffre and Sean Brugos fully commit to their roles as tortured prisoners and both give great performances. The play itself gives little exposition and very little time to develop any sort of relationship with the characters. I'm still trying to figure out what the intended message of the play is, why was it written, why are we watching it, why are we supposed to care about these characters? I spent most of the short show expecting there would be a moment at the end that brought everything into clarity but sadly that didn't happen. I give props to both Alexa Giuffre and Sean Burgos, because they're very committed to their characters, but the 20 minute "EXPERIMENT" may not be for everyone. Melanie Wehrmacher's play has little to no exposition, and doesn't allow it's character to really change between the beginning and end of the play. As a result, it's characters, regardless of who's playing them, come across as a little bit unlikeable. Maybe it was just me, but I didn't understand what I was supposed to take away from this show, and I wasn't exactly sure who it was trying to reach, or what it was trying to say. The Experiment directed by Tamiko Washington was one of the most brilliant shows I have seen this whole year. The moments the actors created on stage with each electrified the whole space. I was on the edge of my seat and also creeping to the back of it from the shocking & horrifying elements of the material. Incredibly strong performances and solid direction couldn't save a script that lacks both character arcs and crucial elements to tell a complete, or at least clear, story. I find myself echoing the question of other reviewers - what were we supposed to take away from this? I felt like there could have been so much more meat to the story had there been actual conflict between the characters, or between the characters and their mysterious captors. Instead, any conflict is relegated to the background, as the scenario resolves itself almost immediately, with one character's almost inexplicable acquiescence to the other, defanging the plot and robbing the audience of what could have been an incredible dramatic journey. This is a show that you'd expect to see in a theater writing class in high school. The writing is unimaginative, the direction steers away from the drama and anything that may have been compelling in the tired script and the acting is over the top and unbelievable. The trifecta.... full review
