Wings

An interesting production. Having seen four shows at the Fringe, this has the strongest acting. Rocky Lane's a force to be reckoned with as a woman dealing with a stroke. Her committed acting prowess is balanced with sensitivity and vulnerability. Not lighthearted fare, this play goes to dark places, but ultimately is about a human being's love of life. super awesome physicality/choreographed movement from the performers! and really compelling stage pictures from the director, Naomi Bennett, who used the small space in an intimate but also expansive way to reflect the internal chaos and confusion of a mind experiencing a stroke. some cool multimedia visuals, and really dynamic, specific sound design, which tells its own sonic story. ... full review

I happen to have seen the opening night of the original Broadway version, featuring Constance Cummings Tony winning performance, and have to say this small theatre,more dance-oriented production compares quite favorably. Rocky Lane is much younger than Ms. Cummings was in 1979, but still brings a truth to the role that nicely grounds this production, and her supporting cast handle both their speaking roles and the movement segments beautifully. ... full review

Rocky Lane's performance was brilliant. She truly became the eternal woman with her facial expressions ranging from a young woman to a mad one to a very old one all with such authenticity that it was breathtaking. I loved her performance. From a woman's perspective the play itself is a challenge to understand. The other production values were very expertly handled even if a little puzzling at times. But that is why we have our marvellous colleges to give our upcoming artists the chance to 'fly'. ... full review

I was extremely impressed with the production. The ensemble cast coming in and out throughout, often dancing was intriguing and added layers to what could've been extremely stark. Rocky Lane did an amazing job on all the dialogue, the inverted words and strange language invoked by the character. She deserves much recognition for a top notch job. Honestly, I am not a fan of the writer. Maybe because the piece starts and ends at the same place. The fragmented character we see suffering from a stroke seems to be only remnants of the developed character we know little about. Rocky does much with what we little we know. The production was professional, tight and showed an enormous amount of excellent work by the director, ... full review
