I loved the fact that Awkward Pauses gave us three thought-provoking works in one! The first and second short plays were great! Both were really well-acted. The first play about a pair of people on a roller coaster that's apparently leading them to their deaths really struck a nerve and got me thinking about if and when it's OK to take your own life. The second play, about an estranged couple giving their kid time with his babysitter crush while they go out to a movie was hilarious - watching this awkward, distant couple try to have sex on a park bench in winter to "spice things up" was so funny - but also a great examination of getting to be a certain age in a relationship and wanting to know what's next. Saw their preview in which some technical issues were still being hashed out. I appreciate that these shows are original works by local playwrights. I feel it important to patron groups who are cultivating & producing art right here where we live. This production is comprised of 3 short plays - "Ten Minutes to Go" by Evan Baughfman, "Ducks in Winter", by Itai Grunfeld and "The Middle American" by Mauro Flores, Jr. All 3 scripts are solidly written and well acted by this talented ensemble. I love that 3 of a Kind does original works and three of them for the price of one ticket is definitely a bonus. As all relationships have awkward pauses, so did these plays, but in very different ways. The first play is about the start of a relationship. Finding your way through those first awkward steps in getting to know one another can be a challenge with someone you've only just met. Especially when those first moments are also your last. The second play examines the awkward pauses found in a stagnant relationship as a married couple sharing a park bench in winter make an attempt at changing things up by engaging in some public fornication. Dystopian Amusement Parks, Exhibitionism and Bleeding Hearts! What's not to love? "Awkward Pauses" is a very smartly written collection of One-Acts that deal with failed attempts at social interaction, creating the awkward pauses of the play's title. These three shows had a great twist that you never saw coming!!! I really liked all three. I found them to flow very well with a very wide range of emotion. 3ofAkind is a great idea to portray the work of actors/writers/ directors and let people get in the action. Finally, a theatre company that doesn't pretend to be something they're not. 3 of a Kind flawless executes three very awkward plays about sex, death, and cheeseburgers! The direction, the minimal set design, the acting, the writing, EVERYTHING is spot on in this trio of comedies and I particularly enjoyed the performances by Jerry Chappell, Susan Marlowe, and Randy Marquis - though everyone is excellent! They grabbed my attention the moment I walked in and saw a roller coaster car on stage. I LOVE roller coasters. My excitement continued to build with the sound of swooshing cars rumbling over the tracks. I was eager to jump on this ride to the unknown and I am glad I did. The journeys in each of these 3 plays were uniquely different from one another, but I enjoyed all 3 of them. The level of commitment by the 6 actors on stage dealing with such delicate subject matter was commendable. Bravo to you all. We laughed, we gasped and we left discussing what we had just witnessed.
