My overall impression

This is a tough one. The cast was great—lots of chops, strong singing, excellent chemistry. The production was solid. But the show didn’t do it for me and I think it’s because the original conceit was to have the writers/collaborators actually perform the show. The audience experience was that of being a part of the show as it developed. They’re a Broadway audience sitting in a Broadway theater watching a show about how the show got to Broadway! They’re part of the show’s journey! Cool! Taken out of context, performed by (really good) hired actors in a small theater in Hollywood…it didn’t quite make sense to me and the show didn’t hold up. Now if they had tweaked/rewritten the show for these actors and reset it at the Fringe. . .but then it wouldn’t have been [title of show]. All of that said: this is a solid, professional show.
