A composer pitches a musical version of HG Wells “Time Machine” to a group of producers. “It has everything,” he tells them, “class struggle; youth angst; man vs technology and the ultimate love story…all with songs you will go home singing!” His desperation to sell the idea mirrors perfectly the desperate plight of the time traveler himself in the show-within-a-show. Both he, the composer, and he, the traveler, are over-passionate about their prospective inventions and both share a weakness for artificial stimulation. The ‘producers’ end up playing and acting out various musical parts as we weave in and out of reality and ‘the play’. The composer has many regrets in his life…failed successes, relationships…and constantly reminisces, wishing he could go back do it all over. By the end we’ve witnessed a truncated version of the musical itself, the producers final thoughts and intentions, and the composer’s ultimate dilemma. 10 songs.
