This was an enjoyable production. Now, I'm a firm believer in "show, don't tell," and this script is four individuals recalling the same series of events from their own perspectives (all "tell", no "show"), so this wasn't quite my type of show. The edgiest piece of theatre I've ever seen. The other attempts to bring the works of Sade to the stage I've watched fall woefully short of where this Brazilian troupe went. I hate horror flicks, so I was a little nervous before I sat down to see Exorcistic. However, I saw Orgasmico's "Doomsday Cabaret" last year and was really impressed, so I thought I'd give this a shot. I'm glad I did. This show is a very clever, eloquently low-tech theatrical knockout. It is to the Exorcist what Scary Movie should have been to other horror movies. I laughed my ass off for 80 minutes straight. Joe Mahon is a chameleon. An actor in the vein of Meryl Streep or Gary Oldman, Mahon nimbly switches between three characters - the bombastic Jack, thuggish Riddick and spineless Charles - as he presents to us, his audience of "interns," a typical day in a casting office. You will laugh, and actors in the audience may just cringe a little bit as all of his characters peel back the curtain on "The Industry," revealing its dirty secrets and seedy underside. This is not the first time I'd seen Tales of the Extraordinary, but I can tell you that this performance was my favorite to date. Strong voice talent, good story, audience interactivity and a band of top notch musicians (Windows to Sky) make for a fun romp through live serial radio! The first 15 minutes can be really off-putting if you don't know what you're in for. It's awkward in a wonderful, wonderful way. Brett Colbeth is 100% committed and absolutely unflappable as he delivers a passionate Christian sermon. In the performance I attended, he didn't even bat an eyelash when a patron that was clearly feeling misled about the nature of the show, started talking back to him, then got up and walked out. This production lives at the intersection where a great script, strong direction and great acting meet. I'd never seen TAPE before, and the actors' nuanced, earnest and powerful performances had me sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting with baited breath to see what was going to happen next. Bravo.
