The Women of Tu-Na House

bob leggett · June 13, 2012 certified reviewer
Nancy Eng is an artist. That much is quite evident in this production, as she portrays eight very different characters with one common trait - they are involved in the sex industry. Performed with candor and honesty, The Women of Tu-Na House is almost an expose' on this industry, and the attitudes of the owners and workers there. Despite the small house, Nancy delivered a knock-out performance. Although it was not perfect, it was gutsy, raw and real. I learned alot about my previous mi... full review

Flying Standby

Looking at the previous review, I can't help but wonder how we could have both been at the same show. PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED ON EXAMINER.COM: Ever been disappointed when the long awaiting movie version of your book fails to live up to your memories? That's kinda how I felt after attending the performance of "Flying Standby" at the Hudson Theatre last night. According to the program, it was supposed to be Tonya Meek’s bittersweet comedy, revealing how the determination to escape her alcoho... full review

Tales Of The Extraordinary! 2012

I went to this show after meeting members of Windows to Sky at Fringe Central Station between two earlier shows. I was intrigued by the concept of a live band and the whole live radio set-up. I was pleasantly surprised. Done as a resurrection of a 1920's ear radio show, the show featured a handful of actors portraying a myriad of characters, complete with period commercials. Windows of Sky was remarkable - their music was timeless and the vocals of Joseph and Bennett were incredible. The... full review

Virginia City

I so wanted to like this show. The concept, of the transformation of Samuel Clemens into Mark Twain, was great in principle, but was not what was conveyed on stage. Other than Owen Arthur Reynolds' performance as John Piper, the rest of the cast seemed to be "dialing it in." The casting did not seem to fit the story, and there were many times when it seemed like the entire cast was onstage merely to provide unneeded background. There was an utter lack of emotion, as if they were too bored to ... full review

Jennifer Aniston Stole My Life

This was one of my most anticipated shows of this year's Fringe, and I will have to say I highly recommend it. Believe the hype - this show is the real deal. The show was well written and staged. The show was perfectly cast, and the direction was evident. The entire cast did an outstanding job, but I was particularly impressed by the work of Jesse Holcomb, as "Lo." She played the mentally ill former child actress with feeling and believability through her myriad of moods. The music and ... full review

Sound & Fury's "Doc Faustus"

bob leggett · June 10, 2012 uncertified reviewer
As fans of Sound & Fury will know, this production was a CF. But that's what makes it funny. My wife stated "I've never laughed so hard before." It is witty, intriguing, fun and a train wreck that must be experienced to be truly enjoyed. The boys of Sound & Fury have done it again, missed sound cues and all. It is such a departure, at least in content from their professional Faire ventures - NOT (who am I kidding). It is what it is - a funny romp bringing the classic tale of Faustus to the ... full review

I Didn't Mean to Be a Virgin in the 80's

A frolicking romp through the 80's - not so much a performance as an intimate conversation with the audience. Her use of the sights and sounds of the 80's, including some great movie clips and songs, made the time fly by. I thoroughly enjoyed the show - well done Laura!... full review

Four Clowns presents That Beautiful Laugh

What an amazing piece of theater! The seven (not 4) clowns brought tears of joy to the eyes of everyone in attendance at this premiere, sold-out show. The energy from the entire cast was breathtaking, as they drew the entire audience into their show. They truly knew how to get maximum audience participation, and obviously drew much energy from the crowd. This is a MUST SEE show, and set the bar high for the rest of the Festival. I enjoyed every minute of it. Great job!... full review

T-O-T-A-L-L-Y!

Like Ten West, I saw this show at last year's HFF, at least three times, as well as during the Best of the Fringe series. It is breathtaking, reflective, sad, happy, encouraging, empowering and just plain fun. Kimleigh is dynamic, entertaining and a capable singer, dancer, actress and writer. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up - don't miss out!... full review

The Booby Prize

What a treat! Liz Czerner is wonderful as a slightly nutty, relationship-challenged woman who is learning to live with her double blessings and love herself. Brilliantly staged and performed, Liz took us through her personal history of learning to love her huge knockers while learning to not let them dictate her existence. Her humor was a breath of fresh air in the stale setting of Hollywood. If I was single, I would have been very interested in dating this woman. She kept me on the edge of ... full review
