The SECRET of SHERLOCK HOLMES

With the recent re-interpretation of Sherlock Holmes through the movies starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law, many have lost sight of the original vision of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's literary masterpiece. Thank God for John Mawson and Mario Vernazza! Their show returns the story to the proper vision and setting - Victorian England. Their accents and costumes are impeccable. Their chemistry is obvious. The story is shocking and thought-provoking. Although slow at times, the story ... full review

Speed Merchant (of Venice)

I love Shakespeare, and this adaptation did not disappoint. Set in present day Italy, the men wore suits and the women wore short sexy dresses and stiletto heels. But the language was pure Elizabethan. From the opening minute of the show with best friends Antonio and Bassanio dancing, the entire cast came on and the future couplings were easily demonstrated. Director Tiger Reel assembled an all star cast of some of the finest actors in film and television. Despite the outward appearanc... full review

Love Is a Battlefield

I must admit that this show was not what I expected. The published concept of a group of college studies trying to come to terms with life and love sounded innocuous enough and in no way prepared me for this powerhouse performance. Right off the bat, walking into a theater where the actors were already on stage posed in the climatic position was unique in and of itself. The play took off like a speeding bullet from a gun, and never lost speed, as we bounced back and forth from present day ... full review

DOOMSDAY CABARET! A Rock Musical of Apocalyptic Proportions

I had earlier talked to Sandy Fury about this show, which she highly recommended. As my first foray this year into the musicals of Fringe had been such a disaster, I came to the performance with a bit of trepidation. However, I left having seen one of the best shows at Fringe. The concept of a "Final Summit" on End Times doctrine was fascinating - gathering all these "great minds" together on the day the Mayans proclaimed would be the end of the world, 12/21/2012, was in and of itself intrig... full review

Catamitus: Love Slave to God

Ben did warn me that this was experimental theater, and it was - a mixture of song, video, dance and acting. I found no fault in that - the actors were amazing, and the pacing was quick. The story concerned Ben's search for meaning in life, and ran the gamut from an early childhood incident involving an injury to his head, to his search for love of either sex to his drug-induced journey into mythology. The homoerotic theme seems to be quite rampant at this year's show as two of the play... full review

On the Rag to Riches

This was a fairly unique piece of theater, with a live all-girl rock band backing up a one-woman show about the foils and follys of relationships. Through a series of flashbacks, Katie Molinaro took us through her childhood, teen angst years and young adulthood as she searched in vain for that thing called love. Think of this show more as a stand-up comedy routine with a live band than a theater piece. As such, her choosing of iOWest as her venue was most appropriate. The band was stell... full review

What can I say about this absolute gem of the Fringe! Ramsey Brown is an total delight. It's obvious she learned from the best, as her mentor was Kimleigh Smith (T*O*T*A*L*L*Y), winner of Best of the Fringe 2010. Ramsey is totally likable - you feel for her frustrations in the love quest. You want to rescue her cause you relate to how hard it is to find true love. I had the honor of watching the performance sitting next to Ramsey's mom, who figures prominently in the story. It made it a... full review

30 Minute Musicals: SHOWGIRLS & JURASSIC PARK

OMG! What a riot - so glad I didn't miss it. DISCLAIMER ALERT - each portion is approximately 40 minutes long plus intermission/set change - total running time is approximately 1 hr, 45 mins long. With that being said, both of the shows were amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed Jurassic Park, especially since my friend Tara Perry was sooooo amazing in it. The show was perfectly cast, and almost resembled the original cast of the movie. The action is non-stop, funny, quirky and the best two hours... full review

AFTER PORN ENDS

Regardless of how you feel about pornography, the actors in this business are real people, with the same struggles, addictions and problems that everyone else has. This movie did an awesome job of exploring them, their triumphs, their setbacks and their attempts to leave the business and carry on a "normal" life. Seka, Houston, John Leslie, Randy West, Mary Carey were once made famous by porn but left the business - some on their own terms and some by necessity. Filmmaker Bryce Wagoner spe... full review

Even more than my disappointment in the peformances of Virginia City or Flying Standby, I was devastated by last night's performance. The concept seemed so interesting that I even brought my wife, who had a headache, to see it, as she was as interested in it as I was. Unfortunately, we left after the performance with an even worse headache. First off, the "screeching" of The Raven was annoying and painful. I could have handled it once, but not every single appearance. Second, I felt like... full review
