…meantime at HoJo's

ryan lisman · June 11, 2018 certified reviewer
Christian Levatino is an artist that I immensely respect, his passion and conviction are so fiercely evident in his work, and it makes the theatrical experience feel epic. With consistently snappy and witty dialogue, tons of historical nods, and immense stakes, Meantime at Hojo's is a thrill that must be experienced at this fringe festival. Don't worry if you aren't too familiar with the Watergate scandal, the play does a great job of giving you all the information you need. ... full review

CONVERTED

There is definitely some interesting elements in play with Converted. The topic is very relevant and important. I personally would have liked to have seen those topics being treated with more weight, but the comedic route that the play took is still a valid option to mock the absurdity of the gay conversion camps. There are some great performances here, and I think it's worth seeing. ... full review

Penetration

It's great when you can see a play that is totally up your alley, and Penetration really was that for me. I really appreciate the play's willingness to push the boundaries, exploring challenging subject material, and exposing the characters flaws and strengths both in a really complex way. I found the play really relatable, and I imagine most others would as well, it can be really hard balancing your own wants and the wants that everyone else projects onto you and wants you to uphold. There is so... full review

Narcissus & Echo

In addition to being an engaging theatrical experience, this play tackles a topic that is really important, we really need to start becoming more conscious of the environment, and particularly water pollution. This play does an excellent job at opening your eyes and giving you the inspiration to care more about the environment. I really recommend this play, the entire cast/crew are all really talented and are also great people off the stage. ... full review

Best of INK presents CHARLIE MOOSE MAKES HIS MOVE

ryan lisman · June 13, 2017 uncertified reviewer
This is one of the best shows I've seen so far at the Fringe, everything about it is so original and interesting. This play was able to implore so much of what's great about experimental/intimate theatre and put it into one piece and then put it's own effervescent charm on top of it all. There were many moments in that play that made me feel really emotional and caring so deeply about the characters, I wanted them all to succeed so badly, which to me is a testament of how good the play does of al... full review

Three Can Keep A Secret

I really enjoyed seeing Three Can Keep a Secret, the audience choice aspect was really fun and gave me a lot of personal buy-in. Carey Matthews deserves tons of credit for his hilarious performance, his character work was fantastic, he had the audience in uproarious laughter for a majority of the time he was on stage. I do really recommend seeing this show for a unique and comical theatrical experience. ... full review

Orange Mango Cabaret

This show came at an excellent time, and is important, political theatre of this nature is an excellent way to use art to produce a change in our society. I think that this play would be wonderful for anyone who is extremely frustrated with our government/society (I imagine that's most everyone) and needs a way to get out the frustration. I really enjoyed this show and would highly recommend it. ... full review

Urban Theatre Movement Presents: Urban Unrest

ryan lisman · June 13, 2017 uncertified reviewer
Urban Theatre Movement is becoming my absolute favorite Theatre Company in LA, everything they do is so raw and edgy, approached with such gusto, and does a wonderful job of holding a mirror up to society. All 4 of the pieces in this show gave you so much to think about and left you feeling very enlightened. ... full review

Too Many Hitlers or: The Decoy Decameron

ryan lisman · June 13, 2017 certified reviewer
It took some major guts to put up this play, it's inherently controversial, and I love that about it. The play was always engaging for me mainly because of how brave the concept was. The play is a constant series of laughs, Steven never fails to deliver for me. ... full review

Masc4Masc

ryan lisman · June 13, 2017 uncertified reviewer
I think this play is a very fun experience and also very enlightening about so many aspects of the LGBTQ community. I really loved the satirizing of all of the need to labels that exist in our society, particularly for gay people, and thought that the topic was handled in a very innovative and engaging way. I highly recommend Masc4Masc.... full review
