U and Me and My Best Friend P

bonnie sludikoff · June 26, 2015 uncertified reviewer
Having seen Abby's work before, I knew the show would be a good one, but I worried about my expectations being met. I mean, after she dazzled last year in an autobiographical show that explored the depths of some disturbing topics while managing to keep her audience in stitches and positive spirits... After that, how could a silly show called "u and me and my best friend p" really cut it? Well, comrades, Abby not only reached the bar she set with last years show, she grabbed the bar, did a pul... full review

Catherine: Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey in Today's L.A.

bonnie sludikoff · June 19, 2015 certified reviewer
This show made me want to read Jane Austen, and that's truly a feat! This well-cast show features a small ensemble of strong actors. The shows title character carries the show well with her interpretation of sometimes naive, yet always captivating Catherine. Brendan Weinhold in the role of the hopeful suitor is both funny and endearing. Well-scripted and directed, and a strong fringe-piece. Ray Burley Productions never fails to deliver on affordable, smart theater. ... full review

Am I a Grownup Yet?

A sweet and delightful story told by an approachable and adept storyteller. Grayson is not only an actress, but a gifted artist who showcases some really fun and original elements ( shadowpuppets, cartoons, etc ) in her piece. I'd love to see these elements get more integrated as opposed to being shown in between long periods of storytelling, but I look forward to seeing what becomes of this solo performer as she continues in her journey! ... full review

Alien Vs. Musical

Alien VS Musical is a shoe in for Best Musical at this year's FRINGE. This show boasts a Memorable and creative book and lyrics and phenomenal creature creation; Przytulski and Troop have really created something special! I'm assuming (by basic logic) that this show will be extended, and I advise anyone reading to grab your tickets as soon as they become available! As a level 1 Broadway Musical enthusiast- I can tell you the theatrical references and style imitations are spot-on. As only a mi... full review

BEYOND - Unemployed. Finally.

A finely crafted piece of Solo Theatre, beautifully executed by a captivating performer! Heather takes us on a familiar journey- navigating the world of thankless odd-jobs, money-making schemes, "what was I thinking" career ventures, and my favorite chapter, the Navy! Even knowing that she makes it out, I found myself on the tip of my seat, hoping she would somehow catch a break! Heather shifts seamlessly between characters- her craft with this is beautiful to watch, clean and fascinating, and... full review

The Guy

An important show on a difficult topic. Brian comes out and tells his audience straight-up that the show is going to be heavy and that it will cover the challenging, but important issue of sexual abuse. In the second half of his show, the actor really settles into the story, his jokes get stronger because they're grounded so deeply in the truth, and he takes the audience on a sad, but moving journey. The comedy in the second half really does well at balancing the gut-wrenching feeling of hearing ... full review

Generation ME the Musical

bonnie sludikoff · July 06, 2014 uncertified reviewer
Generation Me was one of my highlights of this Fringe Festival- one of the most poignant and relevant pieces I have seen in years. The vocal stylings of this (all-teenager!) cast were rock solid with particularly beautiful choral/ensemble work. The music in the second act outshined the first act -- some of the songs were a little overambitious- ambitions not unmet by the cast’s abilities, but for a while it felt a little bit like seeing a production of Company where the song “not getting married”... full review

Delightful and surprising - Gerald shifts beautifully between characters all while telling a memorable coming of age story. An enjoyable night of theatre- light but not without meaning-- so glad I made it out to this one.... full review

BEYOND - Schachner Vs. Schachner

bonnie sludikoff · June 29, 2014 uncertified reviewer
One of my fringe picks for sure- Abby's story is important and compelling and I have to say...good for this bold solo artist for stepping into the depths of what is not tidy or easy to talk about - Abby truly goes there for 55 minutes and invites the audience along with her - it was an honor to be able to witness this from the edge of the stage on account of the show deservedly selling out! Would love to see this show extended and am a definite Abby schachner fan - Abby's work is raw and unapol... full review
