Mud by Maria Irene Fornes

MUD is a great play, and one I've had the privilege of seeing done before, so I was excited to see another interpretation at this years Fringe. Unfortunately, this production left me feeling a little underwhelmed. The cast is fully committed to their characters, so props to them for giving it their all. They had some great physical moments that, although left me questioning the decision behind them, impressed. Here's where the show suffers though - each scene begins to look, sound, and fe... full review

BEYOND - I Am Google

It's always risky when a performer must rely on a responsive (and full) audience to have a great show, and it's always risky to put on a show where each audience member's experience is shaped by those other audience members around them. Unfortunately, Craig Shaynak's 2011 and 2012 Fringe Hit "I Am Google" does exactly that. Now, please don't get me wrong - there are parts of this show I did enjoy - such as Shaynak's many voices and a section of the show where he acted out something you can f... full review

The Fire Room

The minute you walk into the "Other Space" at The Actor's Company you are transported into The Fire Room, a poetic and beautifully crafted (sorta fucked up) love story from the brilliant minds of playwright Meghan Brown and director Amanda McRaven. The cast almost effortlessly delivers page after page after page of Browns delicious text and we as an audience slowly begin to realize what were in for. And it's AWESOME. Sure, there are a few gripes I had about the show. At times the live accompa... full review

Aesopera

Opera isn't exactly my first choice when it comes to theatre, but if you're into it, then you should have a great time. This show is so well produced, in every since of the word, that it makes up for the small things I had gripes about. The actors are amazing singers but the fact that this is an opera makes them hard to understand at times - especially if you're not familiar with the source material (and yes, it's in English). The acting at times can be a bit of a bore, as no one does anything pa... full review

One Man Show: A Duet

There's something great about walking into a show and knowing NOTHING about it - and that's exactly what I did. One Man Show: A Duet is a smart, snappy hour of theatre with quick wit and a great premise. The chemistry between TJ Marchbank and Mark Jacobson is flawless, and they're complemented nicely by a crudely thrown together, poorly timed (on purpose?) slide show - not to mention some great sound effects. Oxymoron Masterpiece Theatre throws together a simple, effective and heartwarming show t... full review

The Time Machine Musical

I'm being brave and posting this with my name attached. Theatre is a learning experience, much of the time, and this is only one person's opinion. I'll be the first one to admit that when I heard the words "Time Machine Musical" uttered at the second Fringe Workshop event, I was extremely excited. I thought to myself - "What a great idea for a Fringe Show!" Sadly, this show was NOTHING like I expected, and I had much higher hopes for such great material. In short, without trying to sound t... full review
