Take Me To The Poorhouse

alex scott · June 19, 2013 certified reviewer
It's a wonderful thing when a performer is as entertaining to watch as Liz Femi, and Liz is a performer who knows how to take her audiences along for the ride. From lights up, to lights down, you can tell she loves doing this show, and performing is her passion. There are a few things that get me down about "Poor House" however. Very rehearsed movement on stage seems sloppy at some points, and almost forced at others - sort of like Femi is being directed to make sure she uses the whole space.... full review

THE OTHER F WORD

alex scott · June 19, 2013 uncertified reviewer
The Other F Word, Alyson Mead's quick witted and smart play about four women who meet at a focus group isn't exactly the average 25 year old male's cup of tea... but I enjoyed it. Director Danielle Ozymandias relies on simplicity to get the job done, and all four talented actresses seem to have fun with Mead's tight script. The show runs a little bit over the 45 minutes that's stated in the program, and it could probably be tightened to even a half hour. But if you just want to relax and enjo... full review

3 ACTORS TIRED OF BEING RICH & FAMOUS...

alex scott · June 17, 2013 uncertified reviewer
I'm thrown off by the title of this show, it has nothing to do with the people performing it, or the scenes themselves. What's lacking in a bunch of lighting and sound design issues is made up for in the writing and the acting - as every scene is enjoyable. It's a simple piece, but maybe it doesn't need to be more. ... full review

#Hashtag

alex scott · June 17, 2013 certified reviewer
#Hashtag is a fun and enjoyable piece of theatre that is more about moving to LA and adjusting to it's hectic lifestyle than it is about social media. The cast is enjoyable, but they never really stop being themselves, which make for only average performances, and a lot of times they feel a bit underused. The script, co-written by the cast is great for a fringe festival type setting, but if this piece were extended into a full run, it might need some more work - like I said, I'd love to see the e... full review

To Carry the Child

alex scott · June 17, 2013 certified reviewer
To Carry The Child doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. It's simple, heartbreaking, and elegant all at the same time. The casting for me is a little bit of a mixed bag - sure, they certainly give it 110% but a few of them are indicating more than acting, and that takes away from this otherwise brilliantly crafted drama. ... full review

Baby

alex scott · June 16, 2013 certified reviewer
Perhaps where "Baby" suffers the most is in it's lack of rehearsal and commitment with both of it's actors. Yes, these broadway veterans are superb on their own, but together their lack of on stage chemistry ultimately takes away from what could otherwise be a near perfect show. You can't be afraid to touch your scene partner, especially in one of the most critical moments of the show. That said, Baby is still worth seeing, it's a brilliantly crafted script by Lisa Ebersole, brought to life, ... full review

The BEATING

Fierce Backbone returns to the Fringe this year with Mona Deutsch Miller's experimental, cerebral Court Room play "The Beating". While I don't agree with hardly any of Sam Szabo's directorial decisions or some his casting choices, I do believe this is a show that some people at fringe might find enjoyable - and it is by far the "fringiest show" I've seen so far. Jessica Richards and Karla Solarte shine as Juror's # 4 and 5, and towards the end of the show Michael Khanlarian is a joy to watch. Ove... full review

EXORCISTIC: the Rock Musical Parody Experiment

alex scott · June 16, 2013 certified reviewer
Nothing is off limits with Orgasmico Theatre Company, but that's a good thing and it's particulary evident in their new show EXORCISTIC: THE ROCK MUSICAL PARODY EXPERIMENT. Laura Sperrazza shines as Megan, the little girl possessed by the demon we're all probably familiar with - and let me just say - SHE IS A STAR just waiting to be discovered. One incredible talent and SPOT ON. She shines along with the rest of her cast and everyone fully commits to the multiple roles they play. I wasn't a huge ... full review

... Awkward Pauses

alex scott · June 16, 2013 uncertified reviewer
Finally, a theatre company that doesn't pretend to be something they're not. 3 of a Kind flawless executes three very awkward plays about sex, death, and cheeseburgers! The direction, the minimal set design, the acting, the writing, EVERYTHING is spot on in this trio of comedies and I particularly enjoyed the performances by Jerry Chappell, Susan Marlowe, and Randy Marquis - though everyone is excellent! If you need a quick, light hearted escape from Fringe "... Awkward Pauses" is something I wou... full review

The Ruby Besler Cabaret

alex scott · June 15, 2013 uncertified reviewer
Ruby Besler, simply put, is a fun and entertaining, slightly abridged, story of a girl and her rise to fame. It's a fully realized production that suffered from a few (very minor) technical cues, that ,overall, is a relaxing, light hearted escape from the darker sides of the Fringe world. I would have loved to see this show expanded a bit more, with a larger cast and more caberet scenes. That said - Ruby Besler is a nice little piece of work. Great Job guys. ... full review
