Los Angeles, CA: The Ume Group, an up-and-coming physical theatre ensemble hailed by New York critics for its “commanding, physically impressive performances” (The Village Voice) and “risky physical vulnerability” (nytheatre.com) is making its west coast debut. In a one-night-only, world-premier performance, The Ume Group will present its primitive and profound new piece, “Facet” on the Hollywood Fringe Festival Mainstage.

Drawing largely on techniques from Japanese butoh dance, as well as yoga and acrobatics, The Ume Group’s “Facet” is a 45-minute dance-theatre work in three movements. It’s creators strive to present three distinct aspects of a single life, keying into that part of each of us which is at different times “Fallen”, “Risen”, and “One” with everything. The piece is co-created and performed by two of The Ume Group’s core ensemble members, Jordan Rosin and Yokko.
Jordan Rosin (co-creator / performer) is a physical theatre artist, teacher, and movement coach. Based primarily in butoh, he also draws on yoga, clowning, gymnastics, and martial arts to create choreography and movement with profound and universal resonance. He is the proud co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of The Ume Group. For The Ume Group, credits include writer/producer of BUTOH ELECTRA (Irondale Center, FringeNYC, Syracuse University) & producer of BALDY (FringeNYC). Jordan is also the author of A SENSE OF ENSEMBLE, a blog dedicated to ensemble theatre techniques.
Yokko (co-creator / performer) is an actor and movement artist. She has been a core member of The Ume Group Ensemble since 2011 and serves as the company’s resident yoga instructor. For The Ume Group, credits include The Mother in BUTOH ELECTRA (FringeNYC, Irondale Center), choreographer of “SHINKA-evolution-” Other NYC Credits include The Woolgatherer, The Producers (ASDS Repertory, Dance New Amsterdam), Odyssey (The Wings Theatre), BALDY & The Short Plays Festival (Dorothy Strelsin Theatre, Abingdon Theatre Complex), BALDY (FringeNYC), Othello (The Looking Glass Theatre). She holds a BA in Theatre (SUNY at Albany) and MFA in Acting (Actors Studio Drama School at Pace). Her Solo-Show, BALDY is also playing as part of the 2013 Hollywood Fringe at Theatre Asylum, June 18 – 29th.

The Ume Group (producer) is a physical theatre ensemble dedicated to sharing traditions and developing new work. They are based in New York City at Grace & St. Paul’s Church on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, where they develop their work, host classes, and present works-in-progress.
