Negotiating the US licenses for use of the Conan Doyle characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson is a regular task for JON LELLENBERG of Chicago based literary agents Hazelbaker and Lellenberg, which represents the Conan Doyle Estate’s literary interests in the US. Recent incarnations of Holmes and Watson by ROBERT DOWNEY JR/JUDE LAW, BENEDICK CUMBERBATCH/MARTIN FREEMAN and JOHNY LEE-MILLER/LUCY LIU have all been licensed by the Conan Doyle Estate for US production and/or exhibition.
The re-appearance of a little known play has now brought Lellenberg particular pleasure:
‘In 1988 I saw “The Secret of Sherlock Holmes” during its original run in London and had dinner with the stars JEREMY BRETT and EDWARD HARDWICKE and the author JEREMY PAUL. There was a game afoot to bring the play to Broadway, but sadly, it never happened.’
Almost 25 years passed and Lellenberg found himself dealing with “The Secret” once again, this time for JOHN MAWSON and MARIO VERNAZZA.
‘It is a strong, well written and engaging piece of theatre:’ says Lellenberg. ‘Nothing would please me more than to see these performances lead to something sustained and significant in the States.’
