Writer/director John Sinner – “one of the prominent exponents of surrealistic theatre in Los Angeles” (Reviewplays.com) — returns to Los Angeles stages this June with his Theatre Revelation to present at the 2012 Hollywood Fringe Festival 6 performances of an expanded version of his surrealistic, funny and intense theatrical performance work “If Water Were Present, It Would Be Called Drowning”.
The piece – initially developed at the NY International Fringe Festival and at REDCAT Studio at Walt Disney Hall — stars Theatre Revelation’s lead actress Betsy Moore – reprising her original role as “Lolly”, the short-circuiting housewife, who shares her real or imagined sexual adventures and her fantastical schemes to escape the absurdity that is her married life and domesticity.
As reviewed by NYTheatre.com in its NYC run: “Good surrealism is hard to pull off. Polished and well crafted, this (work) achieves a near perfect balance . . . (Betsy) Moore delivers a stellar performance . . . If you’re in the mood for tightly executed surrealism, it would be well worth your time.” “Sinner is the kind of playwright that goes for the throat.” (ReviewPlays.com)
Sinner is “a big believer in the developmental role of fringe festivals –- it’s become a well-established testing ground, an outlet for experimental new work that goes back to the 40’s and Scotland’s Edinburgh International Festival. My own company developed original new work at the Nederlands Theater Festival’s Amsterdam Fringe Festival and also at the New York International Fringe Festival in NYC.”
Sinner notes that “when the opportunity arose for this year’s fringe in my own home town, I was delighted because I’m an L.A. native and I’ve been wanting to revisit ‘If Water Were Present’ – its chamber form – it’s a 2-actors, under-an-hour piece — is perfect for the shorter fringe format. It’s an intimate piece – intense at times, darkly funny, but also there’s a kind of lyricism to it. After our shows in New York, some audience members expressed a very strong sense of camaraderie for the character of Lolly – it will be a treat for me to see how the L.A. audiences react to this new version in June at the Hollywood Fringe.”
