THE WORD - A WORLD PREMIERE AT THE HOLLYWOOD FRINGE

The Word

view project

From the creative forces behind such award winning fringe shows as “Cookie and the Monster,” “Definition of Man,” “Lamprey: Weekend of Vengeance,” and “Easy Targets” comes the hilarious and heartwarming adventure of Reverend Johnson and LeShaun. “The Word” was born in the late night show “Serial Killers” at Sacred Fools in 2012, where creator Victor Isaac and director JJ Mayes produced seasons 6-11 together. 5 years after it’s premiere episode The Word has now been adapted into a one man show.

The Word ran for 8 weeks in Serial Killers Season 8 and had some rather unusual inspiration in it’s genisis. “This is what happens when you find out the Bible has been translated to Klingon, I heard that and ended up with The First Church of the Holy Homeboy.” says Victor.

The Word – Reverend Johnson is the pastor and founder of the First Church of the Holy Homeboy; he has translated the Bible so that you too can understand all that “who for art thou” sh-… uh… stuff. The Reverend is on a mission to bring the word to whomever he can, wherever he can, be it the lady at the laundromat, the drunk at the bar, or the big booty freaks at the club. He really likes the club. And now the Reverend has written a letter to the parole board on behalf of LeShaun, which confuses LeShaun, because the Reverend hates him. LeShaun’s release sends both men on a journey towards each other, as they try to reconcile the past with the present, and settle some old business.

Victor Isaac (Writer/Actor) – I am very excited about taking part in the Hollywood Fringe festival for the forth year in a row! Previously, he’s been a part of “The Nigerian Spam Scam Scam” (Miriam and Ibraham Abacha), “Lamprey: Weekend of Vengeance” (director), and “A Soldier’s Play” (Director/Sgt. Waters). “The Word” has been my biggest challenge and I hope that you, at the very least, enjoy the show. Now sit back, relax and let me explain to you what had happened.

JJ Mayes (Director) – Has brought you such fringe hits as Definition of Man (HFF17 Best Dance & Physical Theater & Ripest Show winner), Easy Targets (HFF17 Best Comedy), and Cookie & The Monster (HFF15 Best Ensemble Theater). He also brought you last year’s The David Mayes show. He is also directing Night of the Rootbeer at this years fringe. He is a long time member of Sacred Fools and will be directing the World Premier of Tangerine Sunset by Peter Fluet to close out their 22nd Season in March.

So come enjoy a Tanqueray and tonic and let the Rev give you the word. And don’t worry, if you get confused, LeShaun will be more than happy to explain, because, you see, what had happened was…
