Fresh Meat

view project

Fresh Meat happened when playwright Karen Casady responded to a prompt to write about something that is the complete opposite of humanism.
“Don’t ask me why, but cannibalism popped into my mind,” Casady said. “I thought cannibalism is about as opposite of humanism as you can get.”
She quickly envisioned a scene in which two cannibals are arguing about their favorite body parts: “Elbows are my favorite.” “No, I really like the upper arm.” That scene evolved into Fresh Meat, a dark comedy set in a dystopian society in which people are sentenced to be eaten when convicted of a crime.
Now along with director Eric White, they have brought Fresh Meat to life. “I call it a dalliance,” Casady said, “because the play dallies about with an absurd group of characters who include cannibals, furries, a butcher and, of course, the fresh meat.”
White brought his own vision to the play and blended it with Casady’s. “In trying to find a concept for Fresh Meat, I entertained the idea of rebellion and that the audience would be watching a piece of theatre from the dystopian world in which the characters exist,” he said. “I also had to remember that the play is first and foremost a comedy.”
Working from those two ideas, White generated the idea of dystopian vaudeville. “Much like vaudeville worked in the Great Depression, our players present a look at the world in which they live while making the audience laugh and forget their troubles.”
“Our elevator pitch for the play is, ‘Fresh Meat is a dark comedy about cannibals and furries and how we treat our friends,’” Casady said.
Fresh Meat offers its audience members a short amount of time when the enemy is vanquished and the oppressed stand valiant. It also guarantees its viewers gut-busting laughter.
