HOLLYWOOD- BABA, JEE (FATHER, YES), a warm, powerful new drama written by Ayesha Siddiqui, will premiere at the Stephanie Feury Studio Theatre or the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2018.

Set in New York City in 2012, Baba, Jee (Father, Yes) takes place during the devastating days of Hurricane Sandy. Maria, the daughter of a Pakistani father and an American mother, lives in a tiny apartment with her boyfriend Dave. On the eve of Hurricane Sandy, her father (Baba) comes to visit from Pakistan for the first time in years. Trapped inside while the storm rages on, Maria, Dave, and Baba must all confront their differing views on culture, love, and belonging. In the end, they find that what they all want is perhaps not so different after all. Exploring the the contrasting experiences of an immigrant versus a child of an immigrant in America, and themes such as alcoholism and misogyny, the show is a unique telling of new stories.

Featuring a diverse three-person cast: Ayman Samman, Ayesha Siddiqui, and Christopher Tedrow.

From writer Ayesha Siddiqui: “I wanted to write something featuring a South Asian character…someone who just gets to exist as a complicated human and nothing to do with identity or religion. Someone struggling with issues that many people do, like being estranged from their children, being unable to belong, having issues but not knowing how to talk about them…I don’t have an agenda, and I use that word because it’s what I feel a lot of the plays I’ve seen for Muslims and South Asians have. A big question, ‘Are they or aren’t they terrorists,’ or ‘Will they or will they not reconcile their identity of their faith?’ It’s important that those conversations are had, but there are so many more interesting things to talk about. Because we are full human beings, too, with all sorts of complications and problems.”
