Los Angeles, CA (May 22, 2018) – Christianity devours women. It demands submission. For submission is love.

That chilling equivalence is explored in Eyes of the Blind, a brand new horror play making its world premiere in the ninth annual Hollywood Fringe Festival this June. The play’s voice and imagery certainly resonate, crafted by an all women-led production team.

Written by Linnea Bond and directed by Gwendolyn Dreyer, Eyes of the Blind follows Amy Bhaer on her journey home, after yet another family suicide. Her visit is short – only a week to help her father, Kenneth, pack away his youngest daughter’s life. Amy can endure anything for a week. Even Dad. Unable to cope with the guilt of a sister she barely knew, lost, Amy does not trust what she begins to see: her dead sister, Cassie. Apparitions sinister, she must face down decades of repressed familial insecurities to find truth in her family’s tragedy.

A critical and painful look at the confluence of masculinity, faith, and power, Eyes of the Blind details the perversion of a father-daughter relationship to delve into some ugly truths. As Linnea points out, “That’s just it. The most terrifying aspect of this story is not some malicious entity. It’s what’s brewing in the home. What grows and gains power from our complacency. The paranormal frights are just a metaphor.”

Still, it is a genre piece. To create a visceral horror, Eyes of the Blind makes full use of their space and couples the traditional tenants of a family drama with powerful movement-based performances, giving the dead new life. “I believe the most haunting theater experiences come not from behind the fourth wall, but when the audience is enveloped by the production,” asserts Dreyer. “Further, by employing a professional pantomime and haunt performer, we are able to fully explore what inspires fear beyond traditional jump scares and gore.”

Eyes of the Blind has three performances, opening Sunday, June 17 and closing Saturday, June 23. Tickets are $12.00 and are available at HollywoodFringe.org.
